School visit

Programs for Children

Here is a list of my programs, but I am flexible to your classroom’s specific needs.

Where do my stories and characters come from?

(Preschool-3rd grade, 30 - 45 minutes)

How does an author find her stories? Through spirited recounting of tales, I’ll show how stories from my life find their way into my books. Also, how just a sketch of a character or an interesting event may be the start of a story. Using book dummies I’ll demonstrate how a book is made. I will do a drawing interacting with the children and read one of my books. At the end will be a question and answer period.

Jack

Try, try again!

(Grades 2-3, 45 minutes)

The process of making a book from writing the story, creating the characters, laying out the book dummy and finally painting the illustrations will be shown. The importance of revising a story will be emphasized. I’ll demonstrate how I revise my projects just like the children sometimes need to change their work to improve it. In this process the work is polished and a better book is created. I will do a drawing, interacting with the children and read one of my books. At the end will be a question and answer period.

How I use research in creating a book.

(Grades 3 and up, 45 minutes)

In this workshop I demonstrate how I use research in the making of a book, from visiting and sketching the gorilla in the zoo for the book, A Tiger has a Toothache, to researching how different animals sleep for, Sleep Tight Little Mouse. I’ll discuss how and where to I do my research and do a sketch showing how research can be used creatively. I will also read one of my books. At the end will be a question and answer period.

“A Skateboard is just what the doctor ordered for Rosa’s broken leg.”

Let’s make a Book!

(Grades 3-6, a week long workshop, 2-3 hours per day)

In this week long workshop the children will be taken through the many stages of creating their own books. Many examples of book dummies, character studies and paintings will be shown. They will write a simple story or work from an existing tale, develop characters, and create a book dummy. They will learn the process of book making by creating their own book. I will do a drawing, interacting with the children and read several of my books. There will be a question and answer period at the end of each day. There will be a question period at the end of each day.

Scheduling a visit

I can do up to three (45 minute) presentations a day. I love sharing my work with children. I hope to inspire them in their creative endeavors and introduce them to the world of children’s books and publishing. I will be pleased to do a book signing along with my visit. Cost can be an issue for many schools. To save on travel expenses, please consider finding another school in the area that would like to have a visit at the same time. Schools may obtain books from the publisher, pre-sell them and retain all the profits. If you are interested in scheduling a visit please contact me at: MaryMorganBooks@orange.fr
